Cranford candidate Will Thilly breaks through protest signs with kung fu kicks

Candidate Stages Unique Protest at Town Meeting

It was more of a spectacle than a standard city hall meeting.

A local election candidate recently grabbed attention with an unusual protest during a town meeting. Dressed in a martial arts outfit, he executed flying kicks and smashed several of his own protest signs.

The individual, Will Tilley, who had previously engaged in a theatrical stunt, is campaigning as an independent for the Cranford, New Jersey, County Commission. He has been vocal about his criticism of the local mayor regarding issues like taxes, development policies, and community cohesion.

Approximately 45 minutes into the streamed meeting, Tilley approached the podium clad in blue, sporting a yellow belt and a black headband. He began to clap and asked the audience to join him in singing “Eye of the Tiger.” As onlookers looked on in confusion, two aides revealed a sign that read “Unfair Taxes.” Tilley then started to kick at it in a kung fu style. Some attendees didn’t seem impressed; an elderly couple walked away while a man laughed, and another appeared to be exasperated.

But Tilley’s antics were far from over. His supporters unveiled more signs stating “Pool Closed,” “Overdevelopment,” and “Divide,” which Tilley promptly kicked down. They even revealed another sign saying “Let Love Rule,” decorated with hearts.

“Mr. Tilley, please forward your comments to the town board,” Mayor Terrence Curran responded calmly.

Unperturbed, Tilley proclaimed, “This is love,” as two men embraced him and bundled him with a sign.

Shortly thereafter, Tilley took the microphone to express his grievances about the mayor and the town board, claiming they mishandled a contentious 30-year tax-exempt agreement related to a 250-unit apartment complex.

He recounted, “You also voted for a 30-year tax exemption and a PILOT on 750 Walnut last October. And in July, you claimed you never approved that deal and accused me of lying.”

He asserted that this arrangement cost the town millions in lost income and resulted in rising property taxes, even accusing officials of “censoring” meetings and canceling candidate debates for the first time in history.

Attempts to reach Mayor Curran for a comment did not yield an immediate response.

This isn’t Tilley’s first foray into unconventional campaign methods. Last month, footage of him breakdancing at another meeting went viral, amassing over 1.6 million views.

In that instance, Tilley showcased some impressive dance moves, even moonwalking across the floor while lamenting about a tax increase. “I heard the average household would see an increase of about $400, but mine jumped by around $900,” he remarked after his performance. Following his speech, he smoothly moonwalked out of the meeting. Mayor Curran labeled the whole spectacle “a total distraction.”
