Recent Democratic Debate in Maine Draws Attention

Following Graham Platner’s unexpected exit, Democrats aiming for a Senate seat in Maine were likely left feeling uneasy after Thursday’s Democratic debate.

The Republican National Committee’s social media team had quite the day, sharing various clips from the debates that showcased a mix of bizarre and extreme moments from the candidates.

Ashley Webb, a transgender candidate, attracted significant buzz with her unusual comments. In one clip, Webb outlined her qualifications nonchalantly, saying, “I ran a few times and didn’t win,” followed by a slight chuckle. “But I did run for office. And I’m a songwriter, and I’ll write my own book.”

She then spoke candidly about her intentions, stating, “I’m not going to deceive the public, like we’re being lied to right now… like what’s happening with ICE.” Webb elaborated on her support for transgender rights, declaring, “If they want me to use the men’s room, I will, but I don’t want to be assaulted.”

Furthermore, Webb voiced her perspective on gun control, suggesting, “I think a national red flag law is probably more appropriate. If you’re a danger to society, you shouldn’t have a gun,” accompanied by another clip shared by the RNC.

Several other candidates took the opportunity to criticize the Democratic Party and its supporters, advocating for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Interestingly, despite his issues, rumors floated around about Platner, with some expressing that he made valid points about corruption in Washington. “The democracy we thought we had is deeply corrupted by those in power,” remarked Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who notably lost to incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (Republican) in 2014.

Dan Kleban, co-founder of a local beer company, echoed the sentiment: “We need someone to stand up for Maines. Graham Platner was right! The system is rigged!”

The New York Post compiled some of the more unsettling moments from the debate.

After the event, commentators made gentle acknowledgments about the candidates’ performances. Ron Schmidt noted, “Platner had a lot of advantages in terms of charisma… I don’t think any of the people I just saw have that card.”

The eventual winner of this Democratic primary will take on Mr. Collins in the upcoming November election.
