Crew-11 mission set to launch this Thursday

SpaceX and NASA Collaborate for Crew-11 Mission

For years, SpaceX has been dedicated to advancing humanity’s ability to explore destinations like the moon and Mars. Their innovations, including reusable rockets and the Starlink satellite system, have paved the way for a remarkable number of missions—over 500 to date. This partnership with NASA has made space exploration more accessible than ever.

In furtherance of these objectives, NASA is set to launch a mission to the International Space Station this week.

This launch marks the first space flight for both Zena Cardman and Oleg Platonov.

The SpaceX Crew-11 mission is gearing up to depart for the ISS, with the crew boarding the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft named Endeavor. This spacecraft has previously completed several missions, including Demo-2, Crew-2, Crew-6, Crew-8, and Axiom Mission 1.

Crew-11 is scheduled to lift off at 12:09 PM ET on Thursday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. If necessary, there’s a backup opportunity for a launch on Friday, August 1st, at 11:43 AM ET.

Among the crew are NASA astronauts Mike Finke and Zena Cardman, along with astronauts Kimiya Yui and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The upcoming mission is a significant milestone for Cardman and Platonov, as it will be their first journey into space.

They’ll spend seven months aboard the Orbital Laboratory, engaging in research, technology tests, and routine maintenance. Additionally, they’ll help with NASA’s Artemis campaign by simulating lunar landings, which is essential for future missions to the moon and beyond.

Specifically, their efforts contribute to the upcoming Artemis III mission. According to NASA, this endeavor will be one of the most complex achievements of engineering and human skill in deep space exploration, aiming to explore the moon’s Antarctic region. The planned manned lunar landing is expected to take place in mid-2027, lasting 30 days with a crew of four.

Currently, seven members of Expedition 73 are on board the International Space Station, preparing to receive Crew-11. Four of these crew members have been stationed there since March and will leave shortly after Crew-11 arrives.

SpaceX is also preparing to launch a Starlink satellite from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Thursday.

As of now, SpaceX and NASA have not responded to media inquiries.
