Gang Members Shot After Attempting to Run Over ICE Agents
Married members of the Torren de Aragua gang were shot and killed in Portland after attempting to run over ICE agents. Surprisingly, they had been released by the Biden administration despite having extensive criminal records, according to officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
On Thursday, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers opened fire on their vehicle when the gangsters, identified as Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenis Betsavez Zambrano-Contreras, fled a traffic stop while armed.
Moncada, an alleged gang member, entered the U.S. illegally in 2022 but was later released. DHS made this announcement on Friday.
After his release, Moncada was arrested for drunk driving and unauthorized vehicle use, and a removal order has been issued against him, as noted by the agency.
According to DHS, Zambrano-Contreras was actively involved in a prostitution ring associated with Torren de Aragua. She entered the U.S. in 2023 near El Paso but was also released by the Biden administration. Remarkably, she had previously been part of a mass shooting incident in Portland.
Though they were married, their backgrounds raised significant concerns, officials confirmed.
Authorities revealed that Moncada sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, while Zambrano-Contreras was shot in the chest.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that the vehicle was initially stopped, and the two occupants were identified. However, the driver attempted to hit the agents.
“In fear for their safety, the officers fired defensive shots. The vehicle then sped away with a passenger on board,” she explained.
Portland police later found the injured couple near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside Street after they reportedly called for help. The shooting incident took place about three miles away, and both were quickly taken to a local hospital, although their conditions remain unclear.
