Criticism arises after referring to Ayatollah Khamenei as a 'hard-line cleric' in obituary

Obituary of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei Sparks Controversy

The New York Times published an obituary on the passing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, which ignited criticism online. In its headline, the Times referred to Khamenei as “the hard-line cleric who made Iran a regional power,” noting he died at the age of 86.

The obituary described him as “brusque and generous,” depicting Khamenei in traditional garb, alongside a silver beard, presenting himself as both a religious scholar and a writer of works related to Islam. The piece emphasized his detached demeanor, suggesting he managed Iran from a lofty position above everyday political conflicts.

This portrayal drew backlash from various politicians and commentators. For instance, Sen. Tim Sheehy from Montana shared an alternative viewpoint on social media. Many pointed out Khamenei’s association with the deaths of numerous individuals, including reports of regime-sanctioned killings of protesters in recent years.

Some responses to the obituary were charged; FOX News contributor Joe Concha expressed frustration, and Washington Post columnist Mark Thiessen questioned the Times’ assessment of Khamenei. Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton made a jab at media coverage of protest events, while others echoed sentiments that lacked respect for the Times’ depiction.

In defense, the Times stated their obituaries aim to convey why individuals were significant, asserting this is done honestly and fairly, and disputing critiques that claimed otherwise. Additionally, the Washington Post faced similar backlash, with their description of Khamenei as “rude” and “easy smiling” seen as problematic. They also highlighted Khamenei’s literary interests contrasted with his unwavering stance against political reforms and relations with the U.S.
