Criticism directed at Bondi for free speech remarks: 'Kirk would want to speak'

The Wall Street Journal editorial board criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi in a piece discussing the implications of hate speech, particularly following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In an editorial available online, the Journal claimed that Bondi seemed to lack a fundamental grasp of the First Amendment, stating that Kirk’s perspective on free speech was one of openness towards even the most controversial expressions.

“Can we not expect a basic understanding of the First Amendment from the nation’s attorney general?” the editorial questioned, pointing out that progressives have long sought to define “hate speech.”

It continued with a critique of Bondi’s statements, saying she appeared to have a First Amendment misunderstanding, especially after her comments on the Katy Miller Podcast following Kirk’s assassination. In that interview, she remarked, “There’s freedom of speech and then there’s hate speech. There’s no place for that, especially after what happened to Charlie.”

The Journal highlighted a contradiction in Bondi’s views, noting that Kirk believed all speech, including hate speech, should be protected. Using the term “hatred” was described as highly subjective, making the implications of what constitutes hate speech complex.

Amid backlash, Bondi attempted to clarify her remarks the next day on social media, stating, “Hate speech that crosses into threats of violence is not protected by the First Amendment. It’s a crime.”

Yet, the Journal found fault in her attempts to clarify, suggesting she frequently confused “violent rhetoric” with other forms of speech that simply provoke debate.

Bondi was portrayed as being overly influenced by societal trends, with the editorial remarking, “She appears to follow the latest social media sentiment rather than focusing on her role as AG.” The piece concluded by suggesting she should be more informed about Kirk’s views before engaging in discussions about him.

The Justice Department declined to comment on Bondi’s statements made earlier in the week.
