CNN Faces Criticism Over Segment on Viral Fraud Report
On Wednesday, CNN came under fire from various quarters, including Senator Ted Cruz and several conservative commentators, as well as everyday viewers. The backlash was directed at a segment that scrutinized a viral investigation by independent journalist Nick Shirley.
Shirley gained attention last week with a 42-minute video exploring a seemingly inactive daycare center in Minnesota, which has nevertheless secured millions in government funds. His findings led to a federal investigation, with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services halting all childcare payments to Minnesota.
During an interview on “Anderson Cooper 360,” correspondent Whitney Wilde probed Shirley about his investigative methods. Following her questioning, she announced that CNN was “looking into” his allegations. Wilde was later seen attempting to reach multiple Minnesota daycare centers over the phone, but Shirley noted that most were unresponsive.
“Only one daycare facility confirmed its legitimacy,” said Wilde in her segment, which sparked further criticism online. Many commentators pointed out that CNN seemed more focused on discrediting Shirley than on addressing the fraud claims.
FOX News host Laura Ingraham remarked, “It’s not surprising that CNN seems to be siding with the scam artists.” Meanwhile, a popular TikTok account highlighted CNN’s approach, saying they were dismissing allegations of fraud based solely on a few phone calls.
Miranda Devine from the New York Post voiced her concerns, questioning why Wilde interviewed Shirley in person but not the daycare centers in question. She underscored the issue of relying solely on phone discussions for verification.
Shirley labeled CNN’s report as a “hit piece,” expressing disbelief at the network’s efforts to undermine his findings. A journalist pointed out that, within moments of his reporting, CNN’s lead appeared to fizzle, as only one daycare responded affirmatively about being a legitimate business.
CNN has yet to issue a public response to the wave of criticism it has received online.
