Netflix Faces Backlash Over Movie Description
Netflix encountered a significant backlash on Wednesday after one of its movie descriptions drew widespread attention.
A post that emerged on Tuesday afternoon quickly gained traction, reaching millions of users on X within 24 hours.
“The most amazing synopsis ever,” read one comment.
About “Gone With The Wind”
The post in question pertains to the iconic 1939 film “Gone with the Wind,” which is set during the 1860s, amid the abolition of slavery in the United States.
“Netflix’s ‘Gone with the Wind’ description is the best synopsis ever,” a user remarked.
On Netflix’s platform, the film is characterized as “romantic and epic” and “critically acclaimed.” However, the portrayal also conveys an unexpected message regarding its themes.
While it carries a “G” rating, indicating suitability for all ages, the description highlights it as “an epic about the racist 1939 Civil War.”
Additionally, Netflix encourages viewers to explore resources about Black Lives Matter, stating, “If you want to learn more about black lives in America, search for ‘Black Lives Matter.’
As of now, this description remains on Netflix’s website.
Wide Reaction
The response to the description was immediate, garnering millions of reactions globally.
Even Elon Musk, the owner of X, commented early Wednesday, stating, “Change is needed.” The post garnered over 1.5 million views.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz also chimed in, calling the description “ridiculous” on multiple occasions.
In contrast, “Gone with the Wind” holds a more favorable rating on IMDB, with an 8.2/10, where it’s framed as a “tumultuous romance” set during the “Civil War and Reconstruction.”
Interestingly, no direct assertions are made regarding the film being racist.
Streaming platforms have increasingly incorporated disclaimers for modern audiences. For instance, Disney+ has faced criticism for how it addresses its classic films.
Several beloved cartoons, including “Pinocchio” and “Dumbo,” have been preceded by warnings noting “outdated cultural depictions.”
Disney’s Approach
Even The Muppets weren’t exempt; in 2021, Disney issued statements regarding “The Muppet Show,” citing “negative depictions and abuse of people and cultures.” They acknowledged the “harmful impact” of such portrayals, urging audiences to learn from them to promote inclusivity.
Similarly, the classic PlayStation game “Tomb Raider” was re-released in 2024 with a warning for “disturbing depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudice.”
As of now, Netflix has not provided any comments on the situation.
