Critics said President Biden’s Thursday press conference was a “low point” for Democrats amid ongoing turmoil within the party.
“It’s going to end badly for Democrats. A bunch of gaffes. It’s not going to calm people’s fears. But it’s not enough for Democrats to make a political standoff with his candidacy tonight,” said Josh Holmes, host of the Ruthless podcast.

“So far, this has been a Goldilocks performance, much like Biden’s ABC News interview: not bad enough to draw criticism, but not good enough to silence his critics. This is a frustrating situation for Democrats,” said Kirk A. Budd, editor of the National Journal Hotline.
“Trump and the RNC will benefit, but Democrats waiting for the statement will be hurt the most,” Spectator magazine executive editor Ben Domenech, known on Twitter as X, added.
“This press conference is like a Rorschach test that, in and of itself, doesn’t lead to decisive action,” said Kyle Sanders, a political science professor at Colorado State University. “The problem is that it’s not fatally bad, but it’s not great either. It’s no-win territory. It’s exactly what the Democrats didn’t need.”
NBC’s Chuck Todd says Biden’s “whole narrative” would fall apart if he continues to campaign. “His ambition is paramount.”

Fox News senior White House correspondent Jackie Heinrich, publishing text conversations with Democratic sources, said, “This is the worst possible outcome… unless it’s Hunter and we need a pardon.”
“Is it because his retirement is taking so long?” she asked.
“Yes,” the Democratic source responded.

There were several eyebrow-raising moments during the press conference, including when Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “President Trump” and said he was “following the advice of the commander in chief” when he meant the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Shortly before the press conference, he mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.”
