Andy Serkis’s Take on Animal Farm

Co-writer and director Andy Serkis has embarked on a reimagining of George Orwell’s classic, Animal Farm, which originally appeared in 1945. This novel offers a sharp commentary on the Russian Revolution, seen through the eyes of talking animals on a farm.

In the story, the underappreciated animals at Manor Farm revolt against their human owners, led by two pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, who are meant to promote equality among all creatures. However, akin to the realities of Soviet communism, they resort to violence and intimidation to maintain control. Ironically, while the pigs preach equality, they indulge in the luxury afforded by their power.

Orwell’s critique of “equality” is strikingly evident in the narrative. It paradoxically highlights the empty promises of authoritarian regimes on the left. True individuality, ambition, and personal desires are often silenced under the weight of violence and poverty.

Serkis expressed that he could have pushed the adaptation even further. It raises the question: have we seen this kind of ambition before? He wondered what Orwell might write today. Rather than merely reflecting Stalinist Russia, Serkis leaned towards themes like capitalism and the excesses of wealth. One character, the billionaire Pilkington (voiced by Glenn Close), drives a vehicle that draws similarities to a Cybertruck, which adds an intriguing twist.

Along with some unconventional humor, Serkis made structural changes to the story’s conclusion…

The classic narrative doesn’t typically have a happy ending, but Serkis’s version diverges significantly. In this new third act, the character Lucky has a change of heart and reconciles with the other animals, leading them to overcome Napoleon and the capitalist Pilkington. Lucky’s story transforms into a cautionary tale for today’s audience.

And if you’re worried about political undertones, Serkis made a statement at the film’s premiere by sporting a red “Animal Farm: Fiction Again” hat.

Interestingly, the film appears to be facing challenges despite its potential. It’s been suggested that Animal Farm might struggle at the box office, with projections estimating earnings between $2.5 million and $7 million for its opening weekend. The film had a production budget of $35 million, with promotional costs likely adding another $25 million, bringing the total tab to about $60 million. Typically, to break even, a film needs to make double its costs, which means Animal Farm would have to hit around $120 million—an unlikely feat.

So, how does the film stack up?

It seems the outlook is quite grim. Films that push for “correct” politics often don’t fare well with critics, and this one appears no different.

Even with its anti-free market and anti-Trump themes, Animal Farm is reportedly struggling with a low rating of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes.

To be honest, watching this film’s downfall might turn out to be more entertaining than the movie itself.

Hollywood seems to be missing the mark. Feel free to express your feelings on that.
