Critics say Zohran Mamdani is softening his anti-police stance by considering NYPD Commissioner Tisch for mayor if he wins.

Socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani is facing criticism for seemingly softening his stance on police issues by considering keeping Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner if he wins. This move is controversial, especially since many prominent figures in New York are rallying behind Mamdani’s candidacy. It’s interesting, really, how he might be strategizing his way through the Democratic primary while attempting to hide his more radical views.

Even though Mamdani and Tisch have differing perspectives on bail reform, discovery laws, and various public safety matters, he seems open to working with her, which raises eyebrows. Political strategist Ken Friedman commented, “He’s washing his radical stance, and that’s exactly what he’s doing.” Yet, Friedman hints that Mamdani still needs to cater to voters who support police funding, especially with other progressive voices within city council also proposing changes in leadership.

Tisch, who has a reputation as a serious public servant, finds herself in an odd situation. Appointed by Mayor Eric Adams to restore confidence in the NYPD after several tumultuous leadership changes, she is being pulled into the political fray. Adams himself has been keen to highlight her accomplishments, which has become a part of his campaign messaging.

Brad Lander, another left-leaning candidate, has also declared he would retain Tisch if elected, showcasing how this appointment is shaping local political dynamics. Many see this as an attempt to ease the transition of police management while trying to appeal to various factions.

Kathy Wilde from a major business group has encouraged Mamdani to keep Tisch onboard, but there’s a question of timing. Mamdani recently remarked, “I think it’s too early to make HR commitments at this point, but that’s a real consideration,” when talking about Tisch’s future.

It’s kind of surprising, though, considering how before his mayoral run, Mamdani was quite vocal against Tisch and criticized various aspects of policing. His tweets back in 2020 were quite pointed, calling the NYPD an “evil and corrupt institution” and emphasizing the need for radical changes.

As he campaigns, Mamdani appears to be wrestling with his previous criticisms of the police while recognizing the department’s role in public safety. His advocacy for bail reform and other legal changes also added layers to his platform, but it’s a bit of a balancing act. Recently, he stated he wouldn’t support certain reforms, which makes his relationship with Tisch even more complex.

While it seems Tisch might provide a stabilizing force against his more extreme ideas, some believe this could lead to complications for both. Political insiders suggest he’ll face backlash regardless of who he chooses as police chief, regardless of keeping or replacing Tisch. It feels, in a way, like a political checkmate, and one where there are no easy solutions.

Adams has actively sought to leverage Tisch’s reputation for his own agenda, displaying a somewhat united front in a recent campaign ad highlighting her praise for his leadership. Amidst all the discussions, Tisch responded to critics by reinforcing her commitment to reducing crime, indicating a clear determination to bridge the gap between conflicting views on policing.
