Reaction to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Resignation
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) spoke out on Sunday about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) resignation from Congress, targeting her Republican colleagues who stepped down under criticism from former President Donald Trump.
“Honestly, I thought you were joking. You’ve been opposing the president for a week now, and you can’t handle the heat? Just think about what it’s like to be in my position,” Crockett told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
Earlier this month, Trump withdrew his support for Greene, calling her an “abusing lunatic.” Once a loyal supporter, Greene recently diverged from Trump on various issues, including the Justice Department’s release of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
According to Tapper, the fallout seems to have begun when Trump referred to Greene as a “traitor” after she advocated for the release of the Epstein documents.
Crockett commented, “Listen, he’s angry about it. It’s interesting that some Republicans like [Rep.] Thomas Massey and [Rep.] Lauren Boebert are being called out, but they’ve managed to survive the turmoil.” She continued, “This shows that Marjorie has often instigated a lot of the negativity we associate with the MAGA movement. It’s curious whether she fully grasped the extent of the impact her actions had on others—now that she’s facing similar backlash, I can’t help but wonder why others could endure it, but she can’t.”
Greene, meanwhile, announced her resignation, explaining her growing frustrations with the political atmosphere in Washington and criticizing what she described as a corrupt “political complex” that exploits the American populace for its own gains. In a lengthy statement, she expressed her belief that both parties use voters as “pawns in a never-ending game of division.”
Greene reflected, “Each election cycle, Americans are manipulated by the political-industrial complex of both sides to choose the party that can make them hate the other party more. Yet, the outcome is always the same: nothing improves for the average American.”
In a separate interview, Greene apologized for being part of “toxic politics” and mentioned her desire to mend fences with Trump.
Greene’s office has not responded to requests for further comments.
