Crockett labels Trump a 'ridiculous dictator' while supporting escaping Texas Democrats

Texas Lawmakers and Congressional Redistricting

Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas is expressing support for lawmakers who left the state in 2026, aiming to stall the voting process on a new Congressional map that would greatly benefit Republicans.

Crockett has voiced her opposition to the efforts of Republican legislators and their allies. Notably, former President Donald Trump referred to their supporters as “a ridiculous tyrant” in a recent Instagram video.

“My colleague, a former co-worker at the Capitol, said, ‘deuces!’ So I’m genuinely excited,” she noted. “This man, whom I consider a ridiculous tyrant, is trying his best to undermine our democracy. Yet, there are those who fiercely defend it and stand up for the people. They get the mission.”

Crockett previously gained nationwide attention when she, along with fellow Democrats, stepped away from the Texas Capitol in 2021 to slow down a GOP-supported election legislation vote.

Currently, Democrats are alleging that Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans are merely following Trump’s directives, particularly in neglecting to provide assistance for those impacted by catastrophic floods earlier this month.

“Over 130 Texans lost their lives in the July 4 flood, and Republicans responded with no flood relief bills while they focused on a rezone system to support Trump’s hold on power. This isn’t governance; it feels more like exploitation,” she argued.

Abbott countered by accusing Democrats of abandoning their duties, saying their absence has hindered flood relief efforts. “Texans are understandably upset. These Democrats have escaped their responsibilities, and I believe they should lose their seats for it,” he told Fox News on Monday.

Crockett shared her enthusiasm on Instagram regarding the Democrats’ decision to seek refuge in Chicago and New York City. “They are familiar with the struggles we face. They know their commitments. They don’t serve him. We don’t serve him. He isn’t ours,” she asserted regarding Trump.

“This could be the motivation more Democrats need to recognize the situation we’re in, as he continuously infringes upon our rights,” she emphasized. Additionally, Crockett resorted to calling Trump derogatory names during her video.

Republicans now control 25 out of Texas’ 38 House seats. Trump captured 27 in the 2024 election, while Democrats Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez successfully retained their positions.

The proposed redistricting plan has Trump prevailing by at least 10% in 30 districts, underlining the potential shifts in representation. With Crockett’s district being affected by these changes, the implications of this congressional redistricting could be significant for her and her constituents.
