Colbert and Crockett Dispute FCC Guidelines Over Canceled Interview

Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett has criticized late-night host Stephen Colbert for allegedly not interviewing her opponent. This dispute arose after CBS canceled a planned interview with Crockett and James Talarico, another Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Following the cancellation, Colbert expressed frustration with President Donald Trump, pointing to new FCC guidelines as the reason for the decision. However, Crockett quickly countered, claiming that the federal government wasn’t involved in CBS’s choice to cancel Talarico’s segment.

“This was out of fear that the FCC would say something,” Crockett remarked. She further contended, “We have received information suggesting that the federal government did not close the first segment.”

Crockett continued, emphasizing that she believes this matter isn’t closed. “We expect an official statement from Paramount soon, and we’ll proceed from there.” It seems there’s some uncertainty regarding the situation.

In contrast, CBS provided a statement asserting that Colbert’s show acted “legally guided” by the FCC. The network claimed that the show had to provide equal airtime to all candidates, which affected their programming decisions.

The FCC Chairman reiterated these guidelines in January, reminding networks of their duty to offer equal opportunities to all candidates. “For years, traditional television networks have considered late-night and daytime talk shows to qualify as ‘true news’ programming, even if influenced by partisan motives,” he noted.

Ultimately, CBS stated that Colbert opted to post the interview on social media instead of airing it live, an attempt to navigate the FCC’s requirements. Crockett, who has been featured on the show several times, mentioned that she had not been asked recently for an appearance.

“It seems clear that someone decided against airing the interview,” she said, alluding to possible apprehensions about FCC repercussions. “It felt like a choice was made to approach it differently.”
