Crowd Encounters Texas Troopers during Street Takeover Attempt near Capitol

Protests Erupt Near Texas Capitol Following ICE Incident

On Saturday, a group of anti-ICE protesters attempted to block a street close to the Texas Capitol. However, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers quickly intervened, creating a barrier and pushing back the demonstrators as tensions escalated. This protest was sparked by the shooting of a woman in Minneapolis by ICE agents, who claimed she tried to use her vehicle as a weapon during a police operation.

As protesters gathered, they spilled off the sidewalk in an effort to take control of the intersection. The DPS, chanting in response, moved in tightly, forcing the crowd back to the curb in a matter of minutes. Despite organizers’ pleas for demonstrators to “stay on the streets,” the police maintained their push, effectively ending the protest’s momentum.

Frustrated by the shooter’s actions and perhaps the responses from certain political leaders, the activists voiced their discontent. Many were angered particularly by figures like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, which fueled their decision to take to the streets near the Austin Capitol.

In a bid to disperse the crowd, police utilized pepper balls and gas canisters, aiming to contain the situation.

In contrast to Minnesota’s approach by Governor Tim Walz towards disrupting ICE operations, Texas Governor Greg Abbott made his stance clear. On social media, he expressed that the DPS would not tolerate defiant protests.

Responding to inquiries, Governor Abbott remarked that the incident in Minnesota stemmed from irresponsible rhetoric from national Democratic leaders. He emphasized the right of law enforcement to protect themselves during their duties and labeled the use of vehicles as weapons as “dangerous and unacceptable.” Abbott reiterated that ICE agents shouldn’t feel endangered while performing their tasks, affirming support for law enforcement in Texas.

Throughout the encounter, some officers reported being assaulted as the crowd advanced. Several individuals were arrested for various charges, including disorderly conduct and assaulting a public servant, as law enforcement tried to manage the situation. Officers at the scene faced physical confrontations, with claims of being hit and obstructed by protesters.

Interestingly, despite the chaos, the Austin Police Department had a restrained response. They were noted as being more focused on securing Austin City Hall, where another demonstration was occurring, rather than engaging directly with the street occupation.

This brief but intense encounter pointed to a growing divide between state and local responses to protest enforcement. The DPS’s decisive actions made it clear that streets near the Capitol were not to be overtaken, reaffirming their readiness to act against any escalation from peaceful demonstrations to potential disorder.
