Crowd Sets Police Vehicle on Fire Near Hotel Housing Irish Migrants Following Alleged Sexual Assault of 10-Year-Old Girl

Dublin Riot Results in Arrests and Damage

Gardaí reported that a police van was set ablaze and six individuals were arrested after a riot erupted outside a Dublin hotel accommodating asylum seekers on Tuesday night. This unrest followed an unsettling incident involving the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl nearby.

The chaos unfolded at the CityWest Hotel in Saggart, where a large crowd gathered after hearing about an immigrant in his 20s who faced charges stemming from an assault reported early Monday. This individual appeared in Blanchardstown District Court on Tuesday. Gardaí have since issued a call for witnesses as their investigation continues.

The nationalities of those involved have not been disclosed.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly commented on the situation, stating, “This was clearly not a peaceful protest… this was a mob intent on violence against Garda.” He emphasized that the disorder was, in fact, “violence.”

Attacks on the Garda cordon included the throwing of bricks, fireworks, and glass bottles. There was also the arson of a police vehicle and an unusual attempt to breach the barriers using a horse-drawn carriage. A police helicopter experienced a laser attack that injured one officer.

By Wednesday, five men—two in their 50s and three in their 40s—were charged with public order offenses related to the riot. A woman in her 50s was released without charges, as the case was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The investigation is being handled at Clondalkin Garda Station, and a comprehensive security operation is still in effect.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the violence, stating, “It is not unexpected that crime would be used as a weapon by those who wish to instill dissent in our society… This is unacceptable and will lead to a coercive response.”

Governor Michael Martin described the attacks on police officers as “unjustified,” asserting that those responsible would be held accountable.
