Carnival Cruise Line is testing a program that marks cruise cards with stickers for passengers who have prepaid their gratuities. The idea has drawn a mix of criticism and support.
On Oct. 28, a TikTok user posted a video from a recent trip aboard the Carnival Panorama. Her cruise card had a sticker reading, “Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities.” She also showed a note left in her stateroom thanking her for paying in advance.
The note said that prepaying helps recognize the many crew members who contribute to guests’ vacations, including those working behind the scenes. It also thanked her for choosing Carnival and wished her an enjoyable cruise.
Carnival said gratuities are shared among crew members who serve guests directly and those whose work happens out of view. The company described the stickers and notes as a way to let crew know when a guest has prepaid, while acknowledging the guest’s generosity. It said the program is part of a wider pilot and that it is collecting feedback.
Some TikTok users questioned whether passengers should have to show others that they had prepaid. One commenter said they paid gratuities in advance but considered it a personal matter, adding that guests shouldn’t feel judged if they can’t afford to do so.
Others said they preferred giving cash directly to crew or wanted a way to show that they tipped extra on top of prepaid gratuities.
Some passengers, though, liked the idea. One commenter said they routinely prepaid and tipped extra, while another thought tipping in advance could lead to better service.
The discussion also spread to Reddit, where several users called the stickers awkward and questioned why tipping needed to be made public. One person said they prepaid to avoid dealing with it later but didn’t want a sticker celebrating the decision.
The debate comes amid wider passenger frustration over cruise costs. Several major cruise lines have raised daily gratuities or introduced additional service charges this year. Carnival has also faced pushback over plans to use dynamic pricing for drink and Wi-Fi packages.
