Cruise ship Carnival Legend saves stranded sailor and his cat drifting near Cozumel

Crew and Pet Cat Rescued from Cruise Ship in Gulf Scene

A Carnival cruise ship crew noticed a distress signal while heading to Cozumel, Mexico, leading to the rescue of a stranded sailor and his cat. The individuals were safely brought aboard the ship and received medical attention. Some passengers shared their experiences about the event.

On April 14, a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel came to the aid of a marooned sailor and his cat after the crew observed an emergency flare from a disabled yacht while traveling from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel. The Carnival Legend, on a Caribbean route, acted quickly by deploying a small rescue boat.

According to a statement from Carnival Cruise Line, “The crew and cat are safe and well.” The sailor had been adrift for several days due to engine issues. The company noted that the man activated a smoke bomb in an effort to signal for help.

Passengers witnessed the rescue, describing it as a memorable and emotional highlight of their trip. One couple, who’ve been on many cruises, expressed that they’d never encountered anything like this before. “I looked out in the middle of the ocean and saw a spotlight on a sailboat rising and falling in the waves… it was quite concerning,” they recalled.

The cat, named Dahlia, also garnered a lot of attention from both travelers and crew members. The Carnival Legend, launched in 2002, is a Spirit-class cruise ship measuring roughly 963 feet and can accommodate around 2,100 passengers and 900 crew.

Over its years of service, the Legend has navigated various routes, including the Caribbean and Alaska, while continuously upgrading its amenities to enhance guest experiences.
