Crumbl closes several stores in California due to falling sales

Crumbl, the popular dessert chain, is closing numerous stores after experiencing a sharp decline in sales. So far in 2026, seven locations in California have shut down.

According to a recent report, the company has closed a total of 57 stores nationwide this year. Crumbl is particularly known for its visually appealing cookies, often loaded with frosting.

The closures in California affected stores in places like Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, Hanford, Ladera Ranch, Mira Mesa, Cupertino, and Westlake Village. These closures are part of a broader trend, with locations in Alabama, Florida, and Kentucky also being closed.

This news comes amid a steep drop in sales for the once-thriving cookie brand. A report indicated that customer traffic decreased by 32% year-over-year in August, and overall sales were down 70% compared to August two years prior.

Currently, around 55 franchise locations are for sale, highlighting the struggles the company is facing.

Crumbl was founded in 2017 by cousins Sawyer Hemsley and Jason McGowan, starting in Utah. The brand quickly gained traction during the pandemic, becoming popular among younger consumers for its pink delivery boxes. At its peak, Crumbl was selling nearly a million cookies daily.

In 2023, the chain managed to open 295 new stores, expanding its total to more than 1,000 locations across the U.S. Interestingly, in the previous year, it secured a substantial $500 million credit line from private equity firms.

Earlier this year, Crumbl introduced “dirty sodas”—a non-alcoholic drink trend in Utah—aimed at boosting sales. However, it faced criticism because of the drink’s high calorie content.

In May, Hemsley and McGowan announced their plans to step down from their executive roles but will remain involved as board members. They expressed excitement about transitioning to a founder role to focus on the long-term vision of the company.

As it stands, Crumbl operates only 20 locations in California now. The company has been contacted for comments regarding the closures and declining sales.
