A group of cryptocurrency traders is claiming responsibility for a peculiar trend involving adult toys being thrown onto the court during various WNBA games.
An anonymous spokesperson for the group, using the social media handle @daldo_raine, mentioned to a news outlet that creators of a meme coin named Green Dildo Coin (Dildos) are orchestrating these bizarre antics aimed at bewildering WNBA fans.
In the last week, there have been at least five incidents where green adult toys have made their way onto the court during games. One individual attempted to throw one during a match at Barclays Center but was unsuccessful in getting it past the stands.
In Atlanta, Delbert Carver, 23, was arrested for tossing adult toys onto the court during a match and faces charges including disorderly conduct and public indecency.
Meanwhile, Kaden Lopez, 18, reportedly hurled an adult toy at a fan during a game, resulting in charges of disorderly conduct and assault.
The pranks have escalated to the point where the WNBA felt compelled to issue a statement addressing the issue last weekend.
“The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is our top priority,” the league stated. “Any object thrown onto the court or in the seating area poses a risk to players, staff, and fans.”
They also emphasized that any fan who deliberately throws objects will face a one-year ban along with potential legal action.
Player Sophia Cunningham remarked on social media last week, playfully urging fans to stop throwing such items, hinting that it could lead to someone getting hurt.
During another game in Los Angeles, a similar incident occurred where Cunningham was struck, though thankfully not seriously injured.
After this occurrence, Sparks coach Lynn Roberts shared his frustrations about the ongoing situation, calling it both ridiculous and dangerous. “It’s just dumb. Player safety is crucial,” he said.
Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve reflected on this bizarre trend as a continuation of the long-standing issue of sexualization of women in sports. “This has been happening for ages,” she noted, asserting that it should not be trivialized in media or jokes.
Reeve added that individuals responsible for these acts should be held accountable as it reflects broader societal issues.
Liberty player Isabelle Harrison voiced her concerns, emphasizing that players’ safety must be prioritized, adding that such actions are immature and unacceptable in a professional setting.
Interestingly, the group behind these antics claims not to engage in such behavior because of a dislike for women’s sports, also stating that the individuals arrested had no affiliation with them.
