Safety is paramount, perhaps even more than we often realize.

A crime scene investigator, Amy Santoro, faces the haunting experiences from her job daily.

For nearly two decades, she’s worked in the field of forensic medicine, racking up over 1,000 cases. Some say the 39-year-old has been affected by the disturbing scenes she’s witnessed, with memories that often linger.

To cope, she’s created a home that feels like a “fortress.”

“In my career, I’ve seen every possible wrong,” she shared with Need Tokunou.

Due to past experiences where robbers have forced their way into homes, she has taken significant precautions. “I’ve reinforced my door jam and installed extra deadbolts,” she admitted.

Having witnessed the terrifying ways intruders can enter, she goes to great lengths to secure her home. “I don’t leave any windows open,” she noted.

She’s also mindful of her curtains, acknowledging the risks. “After seeing numerous break-ins and peeping incidents, I always draw the blinds at night to block out the light.”

While some might view her measures as overly cautious, she insists it’s simply an increased awareness.

Interestingly, she feels her job has sharpened her perception rather than twisted it into paranoia. Yet, the question lingers: can someone working in such grim conditions still find light and goodness in people?

“Every time I think I’ve encountered the worst of humanity, something even more dreadful happens. Most people don’t want to think about these things, but I’ve grown accustomed to it,” she reflected.

Yet, despite the darkness, Santoro retains hope for humanity.

“In the midst of all the horror, I’ve observed acts of kindness. Communities come together, families support each other. Overall, I genuinely believe that people are fundamentally good,” she concluded.
