Cubans experienced a second wave of power outages on Saturday after government officials said they were working to restore power to hospitals and vital service centers following Friday's power grid outage.
“At 6:15 a.m., there was another complete outage of the country's electrical energy system,” a post on the official Telegram channel of the Cuban Electric Union said. “The electric cooperative is working to rebuild it.”
According to Cuba's national institutions, the central and eastern subsystems were unaffected.
The country's power grid was breached twice within 24 hours, leaving about 10 million people without power.
Cuba cited U.S. sanctions, power plant shutdowns and fuel shortages as reasons for widespread power outages. CNN reported. The country's President Miguel Diaz-Canel met with state officials Saturday at the National Cargo Authority to discuss potential solutions.
“They are working hard and energetically to restore the electrical system on a priority basis to achieve stability,” Diaz-Canel posted on social platforms. ×. “The wisdom and composure of the people who are the protagonists of this complex era, many of them young people, is admirable.”
