Cuban Regime’s Influence on U.S. Politics Detailed in State Department Report
The State Department released a comprehensive report on Monday, outlining how the Cuban Communist Party has engaged in efforts to infiltrate and undermine American politics for over fifty years. This report stresses that infiltrating campus environments has been a significant focus for the regime.
Titled “Cuba: Capital of Communism in the 21st Century,” the report describes how the Cuban government has carried out a “sustained campaign of subversion against the United States” since Fidel Castro’s takeover in 1959. While many citizens face issues like malnutrition and persecution, the regime has prioritized resources for activities like espionage, infiltration, and sabotage to undermine American interests.
The Cuban government is classified as a state sponsor of terrorism by the State Department, similar to Iran and North Korea, due to its support for various terrorist groups, such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and Hamas. The timing of the report comes just ahead of the anniversary of the July 16 terrorist attacks, significant in the context of the Cuban regime’s history.
While the report discusses the historical destabilizing activities of the Cuban regime during the 1960s and 1970s, it also highlights how the Communist Party, led by the now 95-year-old Raúl Castro, continues to incite chaos and division within the United States today.
According to the report, “The Cuban regime functions more as a one-stop-shop political service for foreign left-wing activist replacements than as an instrument for the interests of ordinary Cubans.” This recruitment of activists and the propagation of anti-American sentiment in U.S. colleges are central to these operations.
The document notes that universities in the U.S. are especially targeted as fertile ground for indoctrinating young Americans who might later occupy positions of influence. Testimonies from defectors indicate that the infiltration of American higher education is a top priority for Cuban intelligence.
Additionally, the Cuban government has invested heavily in forming partnerships with U.S. academic institutions, which have shifted from educational purposes to advancing communist ideology. These partnerships enable Cuban intelligence to exploit shared ideological views among left-leaning students and faculty, thereby aiding in the recruitment of operatives.
The report reveals that the University of Havana, a critical part of Cuba’s intelligence operations, has exchange agreements with about 80 universities in the U.S.
Moreover, the State Department claims that the regime is collaborating with a global network of Marxist groups to attract new participants for its indoctrination initiatives. This includes the “Venceremos Brigade,” which has connections to activists like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The People’s Forum, led by Manolo de los Santos, is identified as a key organization promoting these activities, having recently been involved in significant protests and events on campuses.
The report showed that the People’s Forum has recently enjoyed a substantial increase in financial backing, notably from billionaire Neville Roy Singham based in China. This group reportedly saw its revenue jump from $486,926 in 2021 to around $4.4 million in 2022, an increase of over 800% in just one year.
According to the State Department, the People’s Forum is closely linked to the Cuban government and has funded initiatives like the Venceremos Brigade since 2024.
Finally, the State Department highlighted the ongoing, extensive role of the Cuban regime in influencing various far-left movements and violent uprisings in the Americas and beyond, as outlined in the report. This insight aims to shed light on nearly seven decades of Cuba’s destabilizing activities against the United States.
