Cuban-American Lawmakers Sound Alarm on Cuba’s Crisis

Cuban-American legislators expressed grave concerns on Saturday regarding the worsening humanitarian and economic situation in Cuba, suggesting that the nation is on the verge of collapse. They believe there is limited opportunity for the Trump administration to intensify pressure on Havana, potentially influencing the future of the entire Western Hemisphere.

Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-Florida) articulated his message to the Cuban populace, stating, “We have never been so close to seeing change happen and this regime actually being overthrown.” He added, “There’s a lot of hope for Cuba right now. We have the right president, we have the right secretary of state. You have three Cuban-Americans and a small majority in the House of Representatives fighting for your cause. We will never forget you. So my message is… it’s going to happen.”

Gimenez, along with fellow Florida representatives Maria Salazar and Mario Díaz-Balart, participated in an interview on “My View with Lara Trump” where they discussed the dire conditions in Cuba. They pointed out the extensive power outages, energy shortages, and escalating insecurity on the island. They characterized the situation in Cuba not just as a humanitarian crisis, but also as a growing national security threat given its proximity—only 90 miles from the U.S. coast.

Salazar emphasized, “We are only 90 miles from Miami, the city I represent, but in Western values, 65 years ago, a group of thieves took away that possibility, and now, 10 administrations later, President Trump is restoring it to Cubans.”

Díaz-Balart addressed the national security implications, underscoring that the Trump administration recognizes the dangers posed by the Cuban regime. “The reason we’re so hopeful is because this president is not going to continue to tolerate a regime 90 miles away that has drones that can attack the United States,” he said. He recalled a tragic event, stating, “And remember, just this week, we commemorate the murders of three Americans and one U.S. resident murdered in cold blood by the Cuban regime.”

He continued, noting that prior to Trump’s presidency, there hadn’t been any proactive measures taken regarding the issue. Salazar backed this sentiment, indicating that the focus on the Western Hemisphere under Trump shows a readiness to confront unfriendly regimes. “Look at what he did with Maduro. That was the mothership of evil in the Western Hemisphere,” she mentioned. “But thank God, it’s almost over.”
