CUNY funds research to prove ‘transgender accent’

The City University of New York has committed $6,000 to a linguistics study aimed at determining whether transgender or nonbinary individuals speak or write with a “transgender accent.”

The study authors say their methodology was a concept in response to protests from “queer and Native American communities,” and attests to “pervasive queer theory ideas,” including the field of “translinguistics.” claims that it may be useful.

The study’s activity involved participants writing and verbally giving directions to a fictitious person named “Chad LemonLover” to obtain a fictitious lemonade stand. Participants were then asked to provide a “detailed explanation of how to make lemonade.”

Participants are then asked to fill out a questionnaire that includes information such as age, gender identity, “sex assigned at birth,” race, language spoken, and more.

The data provided is said to be used to “better understand the influence of educational, cultural, regional and socio-economic background on respondents’ responses”.

Participants were given $5 for their participation. Manning reportedly worked with graduate students from Harvard University, Duquesne University, and the University of Pittsburgh to analyze the responses.

The study claimed that the written results of “transgender men (FTM) and transgender women (MTF)” appeared to indicate a “transgender accent.”

It also determined that “cisgender male” and “masculinity” were the most “exclusive” gender expressions.

University of Colorado Boulder said It said the findings included “groundbreaking” findings “regarding the potential for transgender accents.”

The study also claimed that the results supported the suggestion that transgender and non-binary people “write letters that most closely resemble their own gender, rather than the gender they were assigned at birth.”
