Cuomo Accepts Defeat to Zohran Mamdani in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary

Cuomo Acknowledges Mamdani’s Mayoral Primary Lead

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) recognized New York State Senator Zoran Mamdani (D) after Mamdani took the lead in the Democratic primary for New York City. Cuomo conveyed to his supporters that tonight was “not” about him, stating, “Tonight was a Mamdani night.”

Cuomo praised Mamdani for running a strong campaign that resonated with young voters, motivating them to participate actively.

Reports indicate that Cuomo’s remarks followed predictions from Decision Desk HQ about the primaries shifting toward ranked-choice voting options. This came as it became clear that Mamdani had established a more substantial lead than Cuomo.

On Tuesday, Decision Desk HQ noted the trajectory of the race was favoring ranked selections, with Mamdani far ahead. The vote count was ongoing despite Cuomo being acknowledged as a contender in the primary.

As of now, with 91% of the votes counted, Mamdani is leading with 43.5%, which amounts to 428,995 votes, compared to Cuomo’s 36.4% or 358,740 votes, according to the Associated Press.

New York City Secretary Bloodlander secured third place, capturing 11.3% or 111,444 votes.

Mamdani’s win could still take a few days to finalize.

The NYC Election Commission has stated that all first-choice votes will be counted and if a candidate surpasses 50% of the first-choice vote, they emerge victorious. Counting will continue even if a candidate isn’t financially benefiting from the result.

If a candidate receives over 50% of the first-choice votes, they win. Votes continue to be counted in subsequent rounds, eliminating candidates who finish last and reassigning their votes to the next preferred choice.

Previously, Mamdani proposed establishing city-owned grocery stores, citing concerns over rising grocery costs in his community.

On his campaign website, Mamdani emphasized that people in his neighborhood are struggling economically. He suggested creating a network of these grocery stores aimed at keeping prices low without generating profit. His plan involves utilizing public funds to establish a viable “public option.”

Additionally, Mamdani’s campaign has attracted support from several notable figures, including actress Cynthia Nixon, actor Kal Penn, and pop star Lourdes, as he vies to become New York City’s next mayor.
