Cuomo cautions about harmful extremist groups after Adams leaves the NYC mayoral race

Cuomo Acknowledges Adams’ Decision to Halt Re-election Bid

Andrew Cuomo, a candidate in the New York City mayoral race and former governor, expressed support for Mayor Eric Adams following his decision to end his re-election campaign. Cuomo characterized Adams as someone who has put the well-being of New Yorkers above personal aspirations.

In a post on social media, Cuomo stated, “I think the choice Mayor Adams made today was not easy, but I’m convinced he genuinely cares about New York City’s welfare.” He also warned of the dangers posed by “destructive extremists” who bring chaos to cities through mismanagement. Cuomo added, “It’s not too late to counter them,” praising Adams for his background and achievements, noting that he rose from humble beginnings in Bushwick, working various jobs including that of a squeegee man.

With Adams’ re-election bid officially over, the race is now emerging as a three-way contest involving Cuomo, Democratic socialist candidate Mamdani, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani recently gained momentum after defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary back in June and now leads in the mayoral polls.

In a statement, Mamdani criticized the influence of President Trump and wealthy donors, accusing them of pressuring Adams to withdraw to benefit Cuomo. He declared, “New York deserves better than exchanging one corrupt politician for another. On November 4th, we will embrace a government that truly represents all New Yorkers.” This aligns with speculation earlier in the year that suggested Trump’s administration was considering strategies to maneuver Adams out of the race in favor of a showdown between Mamdani and Cuomo.

On the other hand, Sliwa remains committed to his campaign, positioning himself as the sole candidate capable of defeating Mamdani. He boasted about the strength of his supporters and resources, claiming they provide the best solutions for New York City residents to feel safe and secure.

This division in the opposition could complicate Mamdani’s path to victory. A recent Suffolk University poll indicated that Sliwa had garnered 9% support, slightly above Adams’ 8%, while Cuomo received 25%, and Mamdani led with 45% support.

Adams, in a video announcement on social media, emphasized the importance of continuing his work in the office, focusing on issues like crime reduction, lowering the cost of living, and enhancing community services. He urged constituents to stay engaged as they address various challenges in the city.

The Mamdani campaign has been contacted for additional comments.
