Cuomo Critiques Mamdani in Final Mayoral Debate
During the second and final debate for the New York mayoral race, former Governor Andrew Cuomo didn’t hold back in criticizing his opponent, Zoran Mamdani, particularly targeting his lack of experience.
Mamdani, representing far-left views, directed strong accusations at Cuomo, attributing the housing crisis to his governance, which garnered a significant reaction from the audience. Cuomo quickly retaliated, questioning Mamdani’s track record as a state legislator.
“You had the worst attendance record in Congress! You even bragged about getting the highest pay increase in the whole country while hardly showing up for work!” Cuomo asserted.
Mamdani responded by suggesting that Cuomo’s own statement about the lengthy time it takes to build affordable housing indicates incompetence on Cuomo’s part. “By his own words,” Mamdani said, “he must have led an incompetent government.”
Cuomo replied, “It seems my friend doesn’t really grasp how government functions.”
Discussing who is responsible for housing, Cuomo insisted, “The governor doesn’t create housing in New York City. It’s not his job. That’s up to the mayors. They build housing, while the state provides financial resources. I allocated more funds for housing than any governor in New York’s history!”
This comment was met with applause from his supporters. Cuomo then added, “You know, I actually did something! You haven’t held a real job or achieved anything meaningful.”
“You’re unqualified to protect the lives of 8.5 million people! You don’t know how to run a government, you lack emergency response knowledge, and you’ve never suggested any actual legislation relevant to your campaign,” said Cuomo emphatically.
Further intensifying his critique, Cuomo stated, “You missed 80 percent of the votes during your time in Congress! Shame on you!”
Mamdani countered, noting, “It’s amusing that Cuomo creates his own version of facts throughout this debate.” He didn’t challenge Cuomo’s portrayal of his congressional tenure but pivoted to the governor’s housing policies.
The debate featured some back-and-forth arguments until the moderator intervened, directing Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to respond to earlier questions.
Sliwa remarked, “It’s like listening to children squabble in a playground. Zoran, your resume could fit on a cocktail napkin, and Andrew, your failures would fill a public library!”
A key proposal from Mamdani that resonates with New Yorkers is his plan to freeze rents to tackle the city’s soaring housing costs. However, this approach has encountered skepticism from experts regarding its viability.
Polls currently suggest that Mamdani is leading slightly over Cuomo, and some are urging Sliwa to exit the race to bolster Cuomo’s chances.
With less than two weeks remaining until the election, the discussions are intensifying.
