Natasha Cloud Critiques Andrew Cuomo’s Mayoral Bid

WNBA champion Natasha Cloud recently shared a video of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo laughing while announcing his independent campaign for mayor of New York City. Cloud, who plays for the New York Liberty, voiced her thoughts on social media, suggesting that Cuomo is “copying” Zohran Mamdani, a rising political figure.

In a follow-up comment, Cloud stated, “The PR team is not copying Mamdani.” She has been a vocal supporter of Mamdani, saying that his significant win renewed her “human hope.” In an interview, she expressed her belief in his potential, saying, “He’s a Muslim, he’s a socialist, and he’s a Democrat, so he faces a lot of bad PR. But he stands for what he believes, that the government should ensure everyone lives with dignity, no matter their background.”

Cloud further reflected on the empowerment she feels from this shift in the political landscape: “It’s just the right choice. It’s restored a bit of human hope… It’s nice to see people speaking up amid everything that’s going on in our government and our country.”

Cuomo, on his part, is determined to win the upcoming election. He commented on the low voter turnout of just 13% in the June primary, emphasizing his readiness for the general election in November. He had some critical words for Mamdani as well, accusing him of having an appealing slogan but lacking real solutions.

In response, Mamdani expressed confidence about his campaign, welcoming Cuomo back into the race, and noted, “I’m feeling as confident as I was on Primary Night three weeks ago.” He added, somewhat dismissively, that it seemed Cuomo struggled with the reality of not being the inevitable choice for the next mayor.

Mamdani even took a light jab at Cuomo, saying they had portrayed him as just another ordinary guy, jesting about him sipping chai and enjoying street food in his campaign video.

As the political scene heats up in New York City, it remains to be seen how Cloud’s support for Mamdani will influence voters’ perceptions and whether Cuomo can regain his footing in a race filled with unexpected challenges.
