Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is gearing up to run as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral election. This decision comes after he faced a significant defeat against Democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani in the recent primary.
Cuomo’s plans were reported by News Nation. His brother Chris anchors the channel, and discussions have included both Democratic candidate Eric Adams and Republican contender Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo aims to see which candidates remain in the race by mid-September, indicating he may drop out if they aren’t leading.
A spokesperson for Cuomo mentioned that an official announcement about his campaign is forthcoming. Although he remained silent after the primary, questions lingered regarding his intentions moving forward.
“I want to review all the numbers and analyze the rank-choice voting once everything’s in,” Cuomo commented as the deadline approached. “I can still run on the independent line this November, so I’ll consult with my team about the best strategy to support New York City.”
Mamdani’s unexpected victory puts Democrats in a tricky position, especially with controversies surrounding his policies, like raising taxes on high earners and establishing government-run grocery stores.
Cuomo is entering the mayoral race amid the fallout from his primary loss against Mamdani, whose socialist views have sparked considerable debate.
Criticism of Mamdani lies not just in his local policies but also ties to his stance on Israel. Cuomo, during the primary, defended Israel and attracted support from pro-Israel donors, contrasting with Mamdani’s positions.
Mamdani garnered backing from well-known figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and has also reached out to the city’s teacher unions for support.
Recent polling indicates a competitive environment, with Cuomo trailing Mamdani and others like Sliwa and Adams. The former governor, who had three terms in office, stepped down in 2021 amid multiple scandals and accusations, including mishandling information regarding Covid-19 deaths in the state.
