Cuomo Warns of Trump’s Intentions in New York Mayoral Race
During a recent statement, New York mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo expressed concerns that if Zoran Mamdani secures victory in the mayoral race, it could lead to President Donald Trump trying to “take over” New York City. Cuomo said, “If Mamdani wins, we’re going to see Trump come here and take over New York City. Mark my words.”
In an interview with Stephen A. Smith, Cuomo argued that the federal government is in control of various aspects, suggesting that under Trump, the president could close airports and potentially “fundamentally bankrupt” the city.
Cuomo hinted that he might cooperate more with Mamdani, particularly since Trump has recently indicated plans to increase National Guard presence in Democratic-led cities, including New York. “President Trump needs an excuse to act, right?” Cuomo noted. He characterized Trump’s National Guard deployment as a power play, framing it as a statement about the perceived incompetence of Democrats in managing city affairs.
Continuing, Cuomo stated that Mamdani would provide Trump with the justification he seeks, potentially leading to not just a National Guard deployment but also other agencies like ICE being sent in. “He’ll say he needs to oversee the city because we have an incompetent 34-year-old socialist,” Cuomo added.
This isn’t the first time Cuomo has voiced such warnings; earlier this month, he made similar claims on ABC’s “The View,” suggesting that Trump anticipated a Mamdani victory. In his view, Trump would use Mamdani’s win to bolster his image during the midterm elections, portraying the Democratic Party as radically left. “He’ll run around saying, ‘What happened to the Democratic Party? They’re communists now, they hate the police…’” Cuomo explained.
Currently, Mamdani holds a 10-point lead over Cuomo in the mayoral race, which is a slight dip from a 13-point lead earlier this month, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
