Nikita Kucherov Requests Trade from Tampa Bay Lightning

Reports indicate that Nikita Kucherov, the Tampa Bay Lightning star and reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner, has informed the team of his intentions not to re-sign. In fact, he’s expressed a desire to be traded.

Yes, that’s a surprising development, isn’t it?

According to Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet, Kucherov has let both the team and his teammates know that he plans to seek opportunities elsewhere when his current contract—which is an 8-year, $76 million deal—expires at the end of this season.

Friedman also mentions that Kucherov, a two-time Hart Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion, has requested a trade. However, both Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois and Kucherov’s agent, Dan Milstein, have not commented on this situation.

You’d think that Kucherov would have been a lock to re-sign with the Lightning. After all, he’s been a vital part of their three runs to the Stanley Cup Final, and the team is performing well this season, currently sitting in third place in the Atlantic Division, just a couple of points from the top spot.

If what Friedman reports holds true, it seems the situation could get quite interesting. The Lightning would naturally look to trade Kucherov rather than let him leave for nothing, considering he is the reigning league MVP.

At 33 years old, Kucherov holds a modified no-trade clause, which should not pose significant obstacles for a potential deal.

There is, however, a bit of a dilemma. The Lightning will likely seek a substantial return for such a top-tier player, while teams interested in a trade will probably want guarantees that signing Kucherov will extend beyond just this season.

This season, Kucherov has recorded 4 goals and 11 assists over 14 games. Last year, he had an impressive 130 points, finishing with 44 goals and 86 assists—marking his fourth consecutive season with over 110 points.
