Billy Bob Thornton Reflects on His Relationship with Angelina Jolie
Billy Bob Thornton recently discussed his past marriage with Angelina Jolie. The two were together from 2000 to 2003 and famously wore vials of each other’s blood.
“We had these little lockets with just a drop of blood in them,” Thornton mentioned during an interview. “It was a romantic idea. But looking back, it was a bit bizarre. We were like vampires living underground, drinking each other’s blood and all that,” he joked.
He emphasized that their breakup was amicable. “We had a great time together. That was one of the best periods of my life. Angelina and I are still very close friends. We parted ways because, well, our lifestyles just didn’t match up,” he explained.
Thornton described their marriage as quite odd. “At first, I was the more well-known one. People in the media seemed fascinated by celebrity relationships, which made things a bit strange for us. We couldn’t really go anywhere without being noticed,” he said. “Sometimes, we ended up saying things that became headlines.”
The couple met on the set of the film “Pushing Tin” in 1999. The following year, they eloped in Las Vegas after Thornton ended his engagement to Laura Dern.
However, after just two years, they ended their marriage. Jolie had once remarked that she was “shocked” by the divorce. “We changed so much overnight,” she said, noting how actors frequently grow apart while working on different projects. “One day, it felt like we had nothing in common. I think that can happen if you get into a relationship before really knowing yourself,” she added.
This isn’t the first time that Thornton has revisited the story of their blood vials. He recalled in 2014 that Jolie had brought home a kit to make the vials and thought it would be “funny and romantic” to include their blood.
In 2001, when the media caught wind of their blood vials, it caused a bit of a stir. Thornton remarked, “We’re really not that strange. People just like to write about us that way. If they knew how normal we actually are, they’d get bored,” he quipped.
Regarding their daily life, Thornton shared a glimpse: “We often eat standing up at the kitchen counter. It’s just us, so there’s no point in sitting at a big table. We enjoy hanging out and chatting in the kitchen—it’s comfortable.” He also jokingly mentioned his culinary skills, adding, “I know how to make a cheeseburger. My wife isn’t really into cooking much, though she did make me pancakes once, and they were quite tough!”
Thornton has been married six times, most recently tying the knot with Connie Anglund in 2014. They have a 21-year-old daughter named Bella. “Connie and I have been together for 23 years, married for 12. I feel like I’ve found my place,” he shared.
Meanwhile, Jolie remarried Brad Pitt in 2005 after meeting him on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in 2004. They were married for three years before divorcing in 2019. The couple shares six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivian.
Their divorce finally concluded in December after an extensive legal battle that lasted eight years.
