Tragic Incident Claims Life at South Carolina Diner
A woman tragically lost her life while dining outdoors with family in South Carolina. Dana Weinger, 56, was reportedly struck by a flying umbrella, which severed an artery in her neck, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Lazy Gator’s Driftwood Grill Home, located on Lake Marion in Somerton. According to Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell, severe winds, described as a microburst, caused not just the umbrella but other furniture and debris to be thrown across the area where Weinger was sitting.
“It’s not something you would expect to happen,” Blackwell commented, showcasing the unusual nature of the event. She expressed her condolences to Weinger’s husband, noting that it was a highly emotional experience. The restaurant’s owners also reported that the entire family was present during the incident, amidst a crowded atmosphere.
Blackwell further stated, “This is just… one of those tragic things that happens.” The Coroner spoke with the family, highlighting the enormity of the loss experienced in that moment.
The umbrella struck Weinger’s neck with such force that it severed her carotid artery, Sheriff Tim Bazley noted. Despite the quick arrival of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A full autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to provide further details on the incident.
In response to the tragedy, the restaurant is offering grief counseling for staff, customers, and families who witnessed the horrific event. They released a statement expressing their sorrow, mentioning the sudden and severe weather that impacted the area on the same day.
“Our hearts are with the families, friends and loved ones affected by this recent tragic incident,” the restaurant said, acknowledging the significant toll on the community, including guests, staff, and first responders. They requested continued prayers and respect for privacy during this trying time.
