Complaints About Alligator Alcatraz
Complaints regarding Alligator Alcatraz are becoming increasingly absurd. Governor Ron DeSantis commented on Tuesday that some individuals are upset about the ham sandwiches not being toasted.
Critics, particularly from the left, have expressed concerns about conditions at overseas processing centers. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) criticized the Florida Everglades facility, referring to it as an “inhuman” environment.
She argued that the setup is designed to highlight cruelty, suggesting that officials essentially “store people in cages for views and distractions.”
As noted by Breitbart News, the processing center offers 24/7 air conditioning and spans over 158,000 square feet. The facility is constructed of aluminum, capable of withstanding winds of up to 110 mph, and is equipped with a backup generator.
Furthermore, there is a 24/7 medical facility, a pharmacy, and access to both indoor and outdoor recreational areas, along with legal and clergy support and laundry services.
Nevertheless, Gov. DeSantis remarked that complaints are escalating.
“They make these claims and say things like, ‘Oh, they’re not being fed,'” DeSantis stated during a press conference. “First of all, they are fed just like the staff is. It’s not a prison; it’s a processing center for deportation. Do you think prisoners eat the same meals as the guards in Florida prisons? Of course not.” He added, “Everyone here is treated the same.”
DeSantis then revealed what he deemed the latest ridiculous complaint: “They were upset about the ham sandwich not being toasted. Really? Take a break.”
He also noted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that the facility include various amenities, including recreational activities.
Wannial Catraz houses multiple detainees, including serious offenders, notably military personnel and gang members like those from MS-13.
In response to allegations regarding inadequate food and conditions in detention centers, DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin stated, “The claim that ICE detention centers lack food and provide substandard conditions is false.” She emphasized that all detainees are offered proper nutrition and can communicate with their families and legal representatives. “Our top priority is the safety and welfare of those in our custody,” she added, while questioning the media’s portrayal of ICE.
