Customs and Border Protection Seizes Prohibited Items

Authorities reported that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agricultural detectors uncovered approximately 100 pounds of restricted meat, plant, and wildlife products in a package from Thailand. This discovery was made after K9 Maisie alerted officers to the suitcase.

According to CBP, the contents included 50 pounds of raw meat, 33 pounds of mango, garlic, bamboo, banana plants, and around 16 pounds of a Bengal monitor lizard, which was rescued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

One CBP post even jokingly asked, “Wouldn’t you be so happy if you had all this in your suitcase?” The image of Maisie sitting next to the eclectic haul was shared online.

It’s worth noting that a mistake involving marijuana at the airport could lead to serious consequences, including up to 10 years in prison and a hefty fine of $15,000.

CBP routinely inspects international luggage for illegal agricultural items, aiming to prevent pests and invasive species from entering the U.S.

In a separate incident, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported a vehicle inspection at the San Ysidro Port of Entry that revealed around 436 fish, including various species like rockfish and yellowtail. The three individuals in the vehicle lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses and were found to be attempting to sell the fish in the U.S.

The caught fish were seized as evidence, and legal actions are pending for violating fishing regulations, including harvesting without appropriate licenses and importing them illegally into the country.
