Customs officials discover 1,500 tarantulas concealed in a spongecake delivery

Discovery of Tarantulas in Cake Shipment

Recently, German customs authorities made a surprising find when they uncovered around 1,500 young tarantulas hidden among boxes of sponge cakes. The shipment, which had arrived from Vietnam three weeks earlier at Cologne Bonn Airport, weighed over 15 pounds and emitted an unusual odor that triggered the authorities to inspect it.

Customs officials noted that their team often encounters unexpected items in banned packages, but this particular discovery, containing so many small containers with the young tarantulas, even startled the more seasoned workers.

While the seizure is notable, it’s disheartening to think about the lengths some individuals go to profit off animals. Unfortunately, many of the tarantulas did not survive the journey, and those that did are now receiving professional care. Ongoing investigations are probing the recipients of the package in the Sauerland region.

As emphasized by authorities, it is crucial to declare all kinds of animals to customs, and to fulfill import obligations when shipping from non-EU countries.

This isn’t the first peculiar incident involving animals in travel. Just last year, an individual at Miami International Airport was arrested for attempting to sneak a snake onto a flight by hiding it in their trousers, a reminder that some people will go to great lengths for their interests.
