Cyclist Finlay Tarling dies at 19 after being struck by a car during a race

British cyclist Finlay Tarling tragically passed away following a collision with a car during the eighth stage of the Portuguese Volta. He was just 19 years old.

The incident, referred to as a “serious accident” by race officials, occurred around 3:40 pm on the N306 road between Mergako and Fafe in northern Portugal, as reported by a local newspaper.

It seems the driver mistakenly thought the main pack of cyclists had already passed and made a U-turn, leading to the unfortunate crash.

As of now, the driver’s identity has not been released.

In a statement, the Portuguese Volta organization and the Portuguese Cycling Federation expressed their heartfelt condolences to Tarling’s family, his teammates, and everyone who cherished him.

According to Portuguese police, a light goods vehicle was traveling against the flow of the race when it collided with Tarling’s bicycle, resulting in this devastating event.

Despite the rapid response from emergency services, Tarling suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest and could not be revived.

The remainder of the stage was halted, and the awards ceremony was canceled due to the incident.

Finlay was the younger sibling of Josh Tarling, the 2025 points race world champion, and had been seen as a promising talent in cycling. He had also earned multiple medals at the European Junior Track Championships and was part of the NSN development team at the time of his passing.

On social media, the team remarked, “Finn was a much-loved member of our team, but most importantly, he was a son, brother, and friend to many. He will be greatly missed.”

They also extended their deepest sympathies to Finn’s parents, Michael and Dawn, and his brother Josh, encouraging rest for their remarkable son.

As the news spread, condolences poured in from all around, highlighting the impact of his loss on the cycling community.

Stephen Park, the British Cycling Performance Director, remarked on Tarling’s potential, calling him a talented rider and a wonderful young man, and expressed profound sympathies to his family during this heartbreaking time.

Furthermore, Portugal’s President Antonio José Seguro conveyed that Tarling’s death had saddened not only the peloton but also the entire nation.
