Rohan Dennis issued an emotional letter to his late wife, Melissa Hoskins, following his sentencing for a car accident that resulted in her tragic death.
On Wednesday, he received a year and a half prison term, which was fully suspended, and he’s now under a two-year good behavior bond. Additionally, his driving license has been revoked for five years.
A letter from Dennis, made public by Judge Ian Press and shared with 7News, conveyed his sorrow and commitment to caring for their two children.
Rohan Dennis’ Letter to Melissa Hoskins
“Dear Mel. Thank you for everything—the children, the memories. They will stay with us forever.
“Even though you are physically gone, you will always be a part of our lives, not just in photos, but in our hearts and minds.
“As a mother to Oliver and Madeleine, you are irreplaceable. I’ll raise them with the values you shared with me.
“Your absence is tangible, yet I’ve found a small idea that will help me when I feel lost.
“The kids are doing well—smart and cheeky, just as you’d be proud to know.
“I’m so sorry for what happened. It pains me that they don’t have you, that our family feels incomplete without you.
“There are days when I wish things were different, and I’m left to grapple with this pain—pain that should be yours to bear, not mine.
“We all miss you deeply, but community has stepped up, trying to fill the gap you left.
“We’ve built a strong support network for the kids over the years.
“You will always be the glue that holds us together.
“I’ll navigate life knowing a piece of my heart is missing, and it’s always yours. I love you, Rohan.”
Parents of Hoskins: “It’s Time to Move On.”
Peter and Amanda, Hoskins’ parents, expressed their desire to move forward after the devastating incident that rocked Australian sports. They are focused on the welfare of their young grandchildren.
“It’s time for us to move on, considering what Melissa would have wanted,” Peter shared.
“We aim to remain involved in the kids’ lives, which is crucial given the circumstances.
“Establishing a constructive relationship with Rohan is equally important; we all need to come together for the children.
“They deserve this; they haven’t done anything wrong. Your support has been invaluable to us.”
While Dennis avoided prison time for reckless driving that led to Hoskins’ death, Judge Press clarified that he was not found criminally liable for her passing but was held responsible for his actions preceding the tragedy.
“Describing the events of December 30, 2023 as tragic does not encompass the pain and confusion this has caused for those who cherished Melissa,” Judge Press remarked.
Peter noted that his family hadn’t sought a harsh penalty for Dennis.
“We must recognize that there were two people caught in this tragedy and remember our grandchildren, who lost their mother,” he said.
“It’s essential they don’t lose their father too; from the start, that hasn’t been our goal. Their well-being has been our priority.”
Dennis, now free to care for his children, brought closure to an 18-month legal ordeal.
The incident, which escalated from a renovation conflict, saw Dennis driving away after a heated argument with Hoskins. Tragically, she leaped onto the hood of the car as he drove off, leading to her being thrown under the vehicle.
Witnesses indicated that Dennis stopped once he heard a loud thump, rushing to help her.
Unfortunately, Hoskins succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The entire event unfolded in mere seconds, with CCTV footage detailing the moments leading up to the accident.
Judge Press criticized Dennis for accelerating while Hoskins was on the hood, labeling it as “dangerous and reckless behavior.”
He ultimately suspended the sentence based on Dennis’ remorse, personal circumstances, and his role as a caregiver.
At 34, Dennis has no prior criminal record, and in a police interview shortly after the incident, he recounted how Hoskins struggled to breathe post-accident.
Hoskins’ death resonated through the Australian sports community, as she had represented Australia at the London and Rio Olympics in track cycling, narrowly missing out on medals. Dennis, too, had earned a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
