Cynthia Nixon, known for her role in “Sex and the City,” recently shared that her son, Seph Mose, is participating in a hunger strike to support Gaza. He’s in Chicago, where he and several friends are taking this stance to highlight the humanitarian crisis there.
Nixon mentioned that Seph, who identifies as an “observant Jew,” is involved with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), a group that takes an anti-Zionist position in favor of Palestinian solidarity. She explained that they’re on hunger strike with the motto, “Stop the hunger in Gaza and stop arming Israel.”
“He and five other friends have been on hunger strikes in Chicago,” she told Newsweek. The action aims to raise awareness about ongoing conflicts and the dire situation in Gaza.
Though she acknowledges the complexity of the situation, Nixon emphasized that her son is committed to doing what he can to effect change. Seph, 28, feels a personal connection to this cause, partially due to his paternal grandparents being Holocaust survivors.
Eman Abdelhadi, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, where Mose graduated, noted that the hunger strike aims to continue until there’s some change in Gaza. “These six leaders at JVP Chicago are launching an indefinite hunger strike today,” she posted on social media, underscoring the urgency of the crisis.
This isn’t the first time Nixon has been involved in hunger strikes concerning Gaza. In November 2023, she joined a separate hunger strike, which lasted five days, although she could only participate for two. The ongoing humanitarian issues in Gaza appear to be dire, with nearly two million people affected by the Israel-Hamas conflict.
While Israel lifted a lockdown on aid in March, the effectiveness of various humanitarian organizations in distributing food has been called into question. Unfortunately, many food distribution sites in Gaza have experienced violence, resulting in numerous casualties—most recently, 51 people were reported dead due to a tank fire at a site associated with global food programs.
