Father’s Unique Obituary Becomes an Internet Sensation

A father from Washington who had also served in the Army shared a poignant tribute to himself that captured the hearts of many, quickly labeled as “the best obituary ever.”

“Michael De Simone regretfully informs you that he is no longer alive,” stated his obituary, which was published by the Centralia Chronicle on Thursday.

In a reflective tone, De Simone wrote, “This was not the plan. He expected to be alive a bit longer to accomplish more.” He pointed out the unfortunate disagreement between his mind and body, ultimately conceding that his body won the argument.

De Simone, who had a stroke earlier in the year, was hospitalized and passed away from a heart-related issue on August 21, as reported by his friend Mark Campanella on Facebook.

The 51-year-old father of two humorously noted that he exited the world much like he entered it—eating pizza.

Though he acknowledged that 51 might seem young for a man, he remarked that it was “quite old for a dog,” comforting himself in the knowledge that he had outlived many canine companions.

A Maryland native residing in Olympia, Washington, De Simone fancied himself an explorer, likening his extensive travel to that of a 12th-century nobleman. “He traveled widely for work and pleasure, visiting every continent except Antarctica—which most don’t count because it’s cold,” he mused. He took pride in knowing that compared to billions of people throughout history, very few had the chance to travel as much as he did.

With a touch of melancholy, he mentioned the downsides of his passing, particularly missing out on physical affection from loved ones. “The one big downside to not being alive is not being with the people one loves, and he loves many deeply,” he wrote.

De Simone is survived by his wife, Daisy, whom he referred to as his “sweetheart” throughout their journey together, from high school to Army life, parenthood, and becoming grandparents.

“They never stopped being sweethearts, and forever sweethearts they remain,” he emphasized.

His love for his two daughters, Johanna and Dani, he claimed, was “greater than creation,” expressing gratitude for every moment spent with them. “Who wouldn’t want as many moments as possible with their beloved children?” he asked.

At the end of his tribute, he offered an apology for the timing of his death, stating, “Michael is, again, very sad to bring this news to you. It wasn’t much fun to receive.”

De Simone was honored at a funeral service on Friday morning before being laid to rest in Centralia, Washington.

His obituary resonated with many who stumbled upon it, with comments praising the sincere and lively nature of his farewell. One online user noted, “Best obituary ever,” while another remarked, “What an incredible loss, God bless his family.”
