Dad of NY baby who nearly died of fentanyl overdose indicted for assault

A Long Island father was charged Monday with assault and other charges after his young son nearly died from a fentanyl overdose earlier this year.

Robert Mauro, the father’s alleged drug dealer, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter after ingesting the same drug his 11-month-old child ingested days later, according to the Suffolk County district attorney. .

Prosecutors said first responders were called to the Lake Grove family’s home on Jan. 13 for a report of an unresponsive infant and found the child pale, wide-eyed and barely breathing when they arrived. .

Dramatic body camera video show Paramedics from the Suffolk Police Department and the Ronkonkoma Fire Department attended to the boy in his bedroom alongside his mother, who said the boy was having trouble breathing for about 25 to 30 minutes.

The 11-month-old boy was unresponsive for about 40 minutes and had stopped breathing. YouTube

In the video, the mother said her son was doing well when she gave him a bottle earlier that morning.

She said she then put the child downstairs with his father on the couch and went back to sleep upstairs, and her husband began to fall asleep, but when he woke up, the boy’s body was limp.

Doctors administered oxygen to the child while he was in bed, then transferred him to an ambulance and continued life-saving measures, according to footage released by police.

On the way to Stony Brook University Hospital, the baby stopped breathing and was unresponsive for about 40 minutes.

The ambulance picked up members of Suffolk Police’s Medical Crisis Response Team (MEDCAT) for further assistance.

Doctors determined the boy may have overdosed, and MEDCAT staff administered Narcan while his mother said, “This is a nightmare.” Do you think it’s a drug? ” The video shows from the back of the ambulance.

Doctors administered Narcan into each of the baby’s nostrils, and the baby took his last breath about five minutes later. YouTube

Officers administered overdose reversal medication into both of the infant’s nostrils, and five minutes later, the boy took his first breath on his own and screamed.

Body camera footage shows one of the medical workers yelling, “It’s over,” as the child’s mother wept tears of relief.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the baby was diagnosed with acute fentanyl intoxication, hypoxia, and respiratory failure.

He received additional doses of Narcan in the pediatric emergency room before receiving a Narcan IV in the pediatric intensive care unit to prevent a return to respiratory failure.

According to the district attorney, investigators searched the boy’s home and found straws containing cocaine, 4-ANPP, heroin and fentanyl residue, digital scales containing cocaine, heroin and fentanyl residue, and vinyl with cocaine residue. The bag is said to have been found.

illegal drugs. What’s even more outrageous is that the child’s father is said to have left his child behind.
“My son was in close proximity to such poisonous material,” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement.

When police searched his phone, they found messages between him and Mauro, 39, discussing drug deals.

Mauro allegedly sold the drug to his father on January 9, four days before his 11-month-old son ingested fentanyl.

After the baby nearly died, Mauro allegedly sold the same batch of drugs to a 31-year-old Patchogue woman on Jan. 26 and 28. At the time, she promised that the product did not contain fentanyl, also known as “non-fenty” mixes. .

But the drug contained several types of fentanyl, and the woman fatally overdosed on Jan. 29, prosecutors said.

The following month, police raided Mauro’s home, during which he attempted to hide evidence by dumping a digital scale and doses of fentanyl/4-ANPP out of his bedroom window into the snow.

The investigation also recovered suboxone pills from both men and cellphones that contained text messages with the deceased woman on the day of her overdose, the district attorney said.
