Dakota Johnson Embraces Her Bold Fashion Choices
Dakota Johnson isn’t too bothered by opinions on her style. In a recent interview with Vogue Germany, the 36-year-old star of “Materialist” shared her thoughts on wearing daring outfits, specifically a nude dress. When asked if she worried it might be too sexy, her response was straightforward: “I really don’t care.” She explained, “I have access to some of the most beautiful dresses and I wear them because they make me feel beautiful.”
Her fondness for sheer dresses isn’t new. Back in 2021, she made a statement at the Venice Film Festival in a custom Gucci dress adorned with jewels and silver fringe. Most recently, at the premiere of the 2024 film, Madame Web, she wowed attendees in a black sheer dress featuring a spider web design.
Johnson attributes her confidence in wearing such outfits to her mother, actress Melanie Griffith. She spoke highly of her mother’s approach to body image, noting that Griffith emphasized the importance of loving and respecting one’s body. “She taught us how to respect and love our bodies and that our bodies are beautiful,” Johnson stated. This message, she feels, is crucial for young girls who often face pressure to conform to unrealistic standards.
She referred to her mother’s support as a “huge gift.” Yet, she also expressed a tinge of sadness that the woman she admires most hasn’t always reinforced messages of self-worth to her: “It really breaks my heart.” Johnson’s style choices have sparked conversations, and while she enjoys wearing revealing dresses, she acknowledges that not every outfit works every time. “Sometimes I look good in that dress, but sometimes I try it on and it doesn’t suit me at all,” she said, adding that it varies with design and fit.
In recent appearances, she’s sported some striking looks. At a Kering Foundation dinner in September, she donned a sheer black Gucci number that displayed her lingerie. And just weeks later, at the Zurich Film Festival, she opted for a long-sleeved blue Gucci dress with a sheer bodice, going braless for a bold statement.
However, her daring fashion choices haven’t always gone off without a hitch. During an episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” she wore a plunging black minidress that left her feeling vulnerable. Upon noticing the outfit’s potential for a wardrobe malfunction, she asked Fallon to keep an eye out and cover her with a blanket. In a lighthearted exchange, he handed her a tissue for extra coverage, prompting a humorous moment between them.
