Dallas police won’t join ICE deportation raids, interim chief tells immigrant meetings

The Dallas Police Department (DPD) has begun holding a series of outreach meetings to inform immigrant communities that agents will not take part in the currently underway deportation attacks or arrests by the Trump administration.

At least five meetings will be held, with the first kickoff on Wednesday, with the rest running until February 20th, according to the DPD Facebook page.

On Wednesday, DPD interim chief Michael Igo tried to ease the fears of troops running through local immigrant communities in support of immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) in a reinforced deportation effort under the Trump administration. .

“I need to keep calling the police, not be afraid to leave your home and go to work, and send your kids to school,” Igo said.

He also reassured parishioners that there would be no arrests or raids at churches, schools or hospitals, but he said immigrants with a prominent warrant would likely face deportation.

Dallas, along with Texas neighbour Fort Worth, led by a Republican mayor, is one of two of the two largest dozen cities in the country.

Last year, DPD reported a citywide decline in violent crime by 8.2% in 2024. This included a 26% decrease in homicides compared to the previous year. According to data released by the DPD, the decline in homicides represents 65 murder victims more than in 2023, bringing the city's homicide rate to the lowest level even before the pandemic.
