Damian Lillard excited about the Bucks turning him into a free agent

Damien Lillard seems relatively unfazed by his recent release from the Bucks.

According to a report from The Athletic on Tuesday, the star guard expressed that he was “excited” about the situation, noting that he can now choose his next team without having to worry about financial sacrifices.

At 34, Lillard is currently sidelined due to a torn Achilles heel and has about $122.6 million remaining on his two-year deal.

His agent, Aaron Goodwin, shared similar sentiments, stating, “This is a fantastic opportunity for Damian. He will get all the guaranteed money while also having the freedom to select his next destination as an unrestricted free agent. Plus, he could rehabilitate at home if he wants to.”

The Bucks had extended Lillard’s contract for five more seasons, committing $22.5 million each year to him. Interestingly, Lillard can sign for a minimum contract and still receive his owed amount from the Bucks.

After the news broke, the nine-time All-Star reportedly received calls from multiple contending teams right away. NBA insider Chris Haynes indicated that Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was not pleased with the franchise’s decision to let go of his teammate.

Haynes mentioned that Antetokounmpo expressed some dissatisfaction regarding the handling of the situation during a Tuesday appearance on NBA TV.

In another move, the Bucks used part of Lillard’s budget to secure Pacers center Miles Turner in a four-year, $107 million contract.

Lillard, dealing with Achilles injuries, may be sidelined for all of the 2025-26 season after the Bucks faced a disappointing first-round playoff exit against the Pacers.

The Bucks had previously acquired Lillard from the Trail Blazers in a three-team trade that also involved the Suns, after taking on Grayson Allen and a first-round pick swap for 2029 and 2030 in September 2023.

In two seasons together, Lillard and Antetokounmpo struggled with injuries and found themselves ousted from the postseason by the Pacers in both attempts.
