Investigation into Federal Agents’ Shooting in Minneapolis
CNN’s Dana Bash engaged in a heated discussion with Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino about a shooting incident involving federal agents that occurred over the weekend in Minneapolis.
Alex Preti, an ICU nurse, was shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent during a confrontation on Saturday. Footage of the event depicted agents disarming Preti just moments before the tragic shooting. He was reportedly attempting to assist another protester being pursued by law enforcement when the altercation occurred.
While an investigation is underway, Bovino had previously stated that Preti was aiming to cause “maximum damage” before his death. This claim raised questions as Bash pointed out that the videos show Preti legally recording the incident on his cell phone. “Where is the evidence that he was obstructing law enforcement?” she pressed.
Bovino responded, asserting that Preti was actively obstructing officers and allegedly assaulting them. Bash quickly interjected, emphasizing that filming an event is a legal action, suggesting that Preti was merely documenting rather than interfering.
Bovino maintained that Preti’s presence there was deliberately meant to disrupt law enforcement activities. When asked by Bash for specific evidence of assault by Preti, Bovino referred to the de-escalation methods employed by the officers, labeling Preti as a “suspect.” Bash challenged this, suggesting that it felt like victim blaming.
He added that “the victim is a Border Patrol agent” and implied that Preti put himself in that situation. When Bash asked about Preti’s right to protest and carry a concealed weapon, Bovino highlighted that such rights don’t justify “riots” or obstructing officers.
Despite the assertion that Preti posed a violent threat, Bash insisted that there was no proof of him intending to cause harm and noted he was legally armed. Bovino reiterated that Preti was there for a specific, disruptive reason.
The conversation continued with Bash questioning the basis of Bovino’s claims, to which the commander insisted it was because Preti was present at the scene. The ongoing discourse indicates a deep divide in perspectives surrounding the incident.
Preti’s shooting marks a troubling trend in Minneapolis, following another shooting by an ICE agent, which had also incited significant protests and unrest in the city. This recent episode is part of a larger narrative on tensions involving immigration enforcement in the area.
