Comedian Dana Carvey recently talked about the challenges of making jokes about former President Joe Biden, especially considering the “sensitivity” surrounding the topic.
During a podcast episode of Flying Through the Wall, which featured David Spade and Julie Bowen, Carvey reflected on his experiences portraying Biden.
“I was aware that he had some mental challenges, which was apparent, but it was a delicate issue in comedy,” he mentioned. “Many people were hesitant about making jokes that might come off as cruel or awkward.”
Carvey characterized his experiences impersonating the former president as “strange,” “surreal,” and at times “fun,” while noting his goal of keeping the humor engaging without crossing into mean-spirited territory.
“The key for me is to make Biden interesting for everyone. If I could do that, then I think I’d succeed,” Carvey explained. “To keep it interesting, there were certain aspects I chose to leave out.”

Spade chimed in, mentioning how it’s often easier to poke fun at a figure like Biden, now that he’s president. “He’s more fair game in that role,” he added.
This conversation took place months after Carvey and Spade joked about the significant amounts of aid given to Ukraine under Biden’s administration.
Spade also made a point about California’s homeless funding issues. “They claim to have lost $20 million meant for homeless support. In reality, they just don’t know where it went,” he said. “Honestly, I prefer not to pay taxes if it’s going toward such mismanagement.”
