Daniil Medvedev raises worry with outburst at the US Open

Daniil Medvedev’s frustrations were on full display during his recent match at the US Open, leaving many in the tennis community curious about his state of mind.

In a surprising first-round exit, Medvedev was eliminated by French player Benjamin Bonji in the third set. Mid-match, a photographer unexpectedly wandered onto the court, which caused a brief halt in play, further complicating Medvedev’s focus.

This disruption prompted Chair Umpire Greg Allensworth to allow Bonji another first serve, igniting an outburst from Medvedev. He vocally challenged Allensworth’s decision, even encouraging the audience to express their discontent with booing.

Following this incident, former German tennis star Boris Becker suggested that the 29-year-old might benefit from “professional help.” This commentary draws attention to the challenges Medvedev faces, especially considering it’s the last Grand Slam event of the year.

Andrey Lubreviff, a close friend and godfather to Medvedev’s children, expressed his willingness to support him through these tough times. “If he wants to change or seeks help, I’m here along with many others,” Lubreviff stated, indicating it’s ultimately up to Medvedev to decide his path.

Medvedev’s recent defeat marked his third first-round exit in Grand Slam tournaments this year, with his sole advancement being to the second round at the Australian Open. The match ended with him violently smashing his racket in frustration.

Interestingly, Andrey Rublev, who has also struggled with his mental health on the court, has spoken about his experiences with psychological help after a past meltdown during Wimbledon.

Medvedev’s loss seems to have taken a toll on him, capturing the complexities of the pressures athletes face while traveling and competing. As fellow player Francis Tiafoe remarked, “He’s dealing with a lot and it’s clear he feels the weight of his expectations.”

During his confrontation with the umpire, Medvedev even accused Allensworth of seeming eager to conclude the match prematurely. “What’s the rush? It’s about the match, not the clock,” he protested to the camera nearby.

Ultimately, Bonji prevailed, marking yet another upset against Medvedev, who seems to find himself in a challenging period of his career.
