Danish veterans protest at the US Embassy in Denmark over Trump's criticism of NATO

Protests Erupt in Denmark Over Trump’s Greenland Remarks

On Saturday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. A significant number were military veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The demonstration was sparked by President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should acquire Greenland from Denmark, as well as his comments at the Davos summit where he stated NATO forces had “taken a little step back” during their deployment alongside U.S. troops.

“They feel betrayed,” remarked Carsten Rasmussen, president of the Danish Veterans Association. His frustration reflects a larger sentiment among veterans who feel their sacrifices are being overlooked. Many of them fought together with American and British forces, and in total, 44 Danish soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan. Moreover, eight more died in Iraq. In a country with a population of just over 6 million in 2025, these losses weigh heavily.

As a poignant tribute, protesters displayed 52 flags bearing the names of fallen soldiers in front of the embassy. Danish Lt. Col. Niels Christian Koeford, who served in Afghanistan, expressed his sentiments about the flags, highlighting that behind each one is a unique story and a young life cut short.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reacted to Trump’s statements, calling them “insulting and frankly appalling.” Trump, in response, conveyed his support for British soldiers on social media but did not acknowledge the contributions of other NATO forces.

In a statement, the Danish Veterans and Veterans Support Association conveyed their disappointment with Trump’s administration, emphasizing Denmark’s long-standing partnership with the U.S. and their sacrifices in various crises over the years. The group believes that their efforts have been disregarded.

Reflecting on broader geopolitical issues, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker discussed Greenland’s strategic significance, particularly as climate change alters the landscape and opens new shipping routes. He underscored the importance of Greenland for U.S. defense strategy, indicating that its position is crucial for monitoring and securing interests in the Arctic region.

Overall, the protest signifies deeper frustrations regarding perceived neglect of Denmark’s contributions alongside the U.S. in global conflicts. The dialogue surrounding these issues continues, with hopes for constructive discussions moving forward.
