A candidate for Congress backed by the Democratic Socialists of America has come under fire for making derogatory comments about white women in the past, referring to them as “ugly colonized women.” This was highlighted in a February 2019 tweet.

Dalializa Avila Chevalier, who is 31 and competing in the Democratic primary for Harlem’s 13th Congressional District against incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, has publicly recounted an incident where she reportedly slammed a door on an elderly white woman at a Popeyes. Chevalier shared this encounter on X, acknowledging a discussion about her shirt with the woman before mentioning that the door closed quickly.

The demographics of the 13th District reflect a diverse community, consisting of 24% Black, 17% White, and over 50% Hispanic residents, as per recent U.S. Census figures.

In a survey conducted by the DSA, Chevalier has committed to abolishing prisons and supports the legalization of prostitution and all drugs for personal use. She asserts her abolitionist stance, opposing reforms that she believes would further entrench systemic issues, and advocating for justice initiatives that address root causes of community harm.

Chevalier has also proposed the creation of government-run agricultural cooperatives to combat food waste and improve labor and environmental practices, drawing parallels to historical programs from leaders like Stalin and Mao.

Previously, at Columbia University, she was involved in anti-Israel activism, collaborating with a student group to initiate campaigns against Israel. Additionally, she played a role in an encampment known as “Tentefada” that upset Jewish students and was linked to a federal lawsuit resulting in a significant settlement against the university.

During a conference on March 6, Chevalier claimed to have converted to Islam three years ago, aligning herself with a radical cleric known for denying the Holocaust and making controversial statements.

Financial reports indicate that Chevalier has raised significantly more funds than her opponent in recent months. Her platform includes advocating for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and critiquing military aid to Israel, expressing disappointment towards prominent Democrats for not sufficiently supporting Palestinian causes.

Political analyst JC Polanco commented on the situation, pointing out the intense ideological scrutiny candidates face within the DSA, suggesting that candidates must conform to extreme viewpoints to succeed. He expressed concern over the language used by Chevalier, particularly regarding her remarks on race and identity.

As of now, Chevalier has not publicly addressed requests for comments regarding her statements.
